The single-engine ground attack plane AMX “Ghibli” was the result of collaboration between the Italian and Brazilian aeronautical industries.
The project was developed during the 1980s to replace the ageing Italian Air Force Fiat G-91Y fighter-bomber. The Brazilian Air Force likewise needed to replace their MB-326.
The aerodynamic lay-out of the AMX is characterized by a high, swept-back wing, and a Rolls-Royce Spey 807 engine that enables it to achieve speeds of up to 1000 Km/h. The Italian version is armed with a 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon and can carry an offensive load of 3800 Kg.
The Ghibli has been used in different fields of operation (Afghanistan, Libya) for forward reconnaissance missions and close tactical support for ground troops.
